What a friend would tell you
What Cal Poly SLO is looking for
Cal Poly is now test-required in the CSU system, and GPA is the dominant factor. Course rigor (AP/IB load) and the specific major you apply to matter enormously; competitive programs like CS, architecture, and mechanical engineering reject students who'd be admitted to less impacted majors. Apply to the major you want. Switching later is difficult to nearly impossible in high-demand programs.
What students wish they'd known
Impacted majors mean you may not get the program you applied for, and switching is brutally competitive. SLO is gorgeous but isolated; the nearest major city (Santa Barbara or San Jose) is a two-hour drive. The student body is notably less diverse than other UC/CSU campuses. Housing in SLO is expensive and scarce, with many students competing for limited off-campus options. The campus culture can feel homogeneous.
Cal Poly SLO might be a fit if...
- You know exactly what engineering, agriculture, or technical field you want to study and want hands-on training from day one
- You want a beautiful Central Coast college town with hiking, beaches, and wine country instead of a big city
- You value practical, applied learning ('Learn by Doing') over theoretical, lecture-heavy coursework

The Campus
Cal Poly's 6,000-acre campus spreads across rolling hills at the base of the Santa Lucia Mountains in San Luis Obispo, a small Central Coast city. Architecture is a mix of mid-century concrete academic buildings and newer LEED-certified structures. The campus includes working farms, vineyards, and a 3,200-acre ranch (Swanton Pacific Ranch). Bishop Peak and Cerro San Luis frame the skyline. Downtown SLO, with its Thursday-night farmers' market, is a mile west.

Cal Poly SLO Traditions & Trivia
Rose Parade Floats
In partnership with Cal Poly Pomona, students have designed and built a float for the Pasadena Rose Parade every year since 1949, with no outside contractors allowed, making it one of the longest-running student engineering traditions in the country.
Open House
Every spring, Cal Poly opens its labs, farms, and project studios to visitors so students can demonstrate what they have built and grown, a campus-wide celebration of the learn-by-doing motto that fills every building on campus.
