What a friend would tell you

What UIUC is looking for

UIUC admits by major, and competitive programs (CS, engineering, business) reject students who'd be admitted elsewhere in the university. Apply to the specific program you want; transferring into CS or Grainger Engineering later is extremely difficult. The application should show technical depth and engagement with your intended major. Early Action gives a slight edge in competitive programs. Strong quantitative credentials matter.

What students wish they'd known

The CS and engineering programs are world-class, but the rest of the university doesn't always match that intensity. Champaign-Urbana is cornfields and strip malls once you leave campus; students who need urban energy will struggle. Intro STEM classes are enormous and grading is competitive. Illinois winters (November through March) bring bitter cold and grey skies. At 52,000 students, the bureaucracy can be maddening.

UIUC might be a fit if...

  • You want a top-5 CS or engineering program at public-university tuition, especially as an Illinois resident
  • You're comfortable in a flat, Midwestern college town where campus life and academics define your experience
  • You want Big Ten school spirit, research opportunities, and a massive alumni network in tech and finance

The Campus

UIUC's 1,783-acre campus spans the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign in central Illinois. The Main Quad features red-brick Georgian Revival buildings, Foellinger Auditorium, and Alma Mater (the iconic bronze sculpture). Engineering Quad anchors the Grainger College of Engineering. UIUC Traditions & Trivia

Alma Mater Photos
Students photograph themselves with the bronze Alma Mater statue on their very first day of classes as freshmen and again on graduation day to capture how much they have grown.
Lincoln's Nose
Before exams, students walk to Lincoln Hall on the Main Quad to rub the nose of the Abraham Lincoln bust just inside the entrance, a well-worn ritual for good luck.
