What a friend would tell you

What Iowa is looking for

Iowa's rolling process rewards early applications with cleaner merit aid consideration. Undergraduate creative writing applicants should lead with their strongest, most vivid work; the graduate Writers' Workshop sets the bar for the whole campus. Reference specific programs: the Tippie College of Business, the College of Public Health, or the International Writing Program. Iowa values students who can articulate why Iowa City's cultural depth matters to them.

What students wish they'd known

Iowa City is a wonderful college town but it's in the middle of Iowa, hours from any major metro. Winter is cold, flat, and long. The 62% four-year graduation rate suggests advising gaps in a large university. Greek life is present but not dominant; the social scene revolves heavily around the downtown bar scene, which can feel limiting. For STEM students, research opportunities exist but aren't as deep as peer Big Ten schools.

Iowa might be a fit if...

  • You want to study writing, journalism, or liberal arts at a Big Ten school in one of America's best college towns
  • You value a university where the arts and humanities are taken as seriously as engineering and business
  • You want Hawkeye football and wrestling tradition alongside intellectual culture
