Iowa City is a wonderful college town but it's in the middle of Iowa, hours from any major metro. Winter is cold, flat, and long. The 62% four-year graduation rate suggests advising gaps in a large university. Greek life is present but not dominant; the social scene revolves heavily around the downtown bar scene, which can feel limiting. For STEM students, research opportunities exist but aren't as deep as peer Big Ten schools.

The Campus
Iowa's campus spans both banks of the Iowa River in Iowa City, with the Pentacrest (five neoclassical buildings including the Old Capitol's gold dome) on the east side and the medical campus and Kinnick Stadium on the west. The Iowa Memorial Union overlooks the river. The Main Library and Dey House (home of the Writers' Workshop) sit among mature trees on the east bank. Iowa City's pedestrian mall begins at the campus edge.
