What a friend would tell you
What WPI is looking for
WPI runs on projects, not lectures. The strongest applicants show evidence of hands-on problem-solving: a robot you built, a community problem you tackled with data, a research question you pursued on your own. Reference WPI's project-based model (the IQP and MQP specifically) and explain why learning by doing matches how you think.
What students wish they'd known
Worcester is a post-industrial city that is reviving but not yet revived. The social scene is limited by the engineering-school gender ratio and the demanding seven-week term pace, which leaves little downtime. Project-based learning sounds great until you are carrying three projects simultaneously with no lectures to hide in. Greek life at 24% provides social structure but narrows the options for those who opt out.
WPI might be a fit if...
- You want an engineering education built entirely around projects, where you solve problems in teams from day one
- You learn by building, not by listening to lectures, and want a curriculum designed around that principle
- You are comfortable in a small engineering school (6,800) where everyone is a STEM student and the culture reflects it
WPI Admissions Strategy
1.3x
Early Decision Advantage
Early Decision admits at 1.3x the RD rate. The trade: ED is binding. Apply only if you'd say yes on the spot.
Early Decision: the numbers
WPI's Early Decision acceptance rate is 64.5% vs 49% overall. ED is binding. If you are admitted, you are committing to enroll. This signals strong commitment and gives a meaningful admissions advantage.

WPI Campus & Culture
The Campus
WPI's 95-acre campus occupies a hillside in Worcester, Massachusetts, centered on the grassy Quad flanked by the 1868 Boynton Hall (Romanesque stone) and the newer Foisie Innovation Studio (glass and steel, 2018). Higgins Labs and Atwater Kent Labs house the engineering workspaces. The campus overlooks downtown Worcester and the surrounding hills of central Massachusetts.

WPI Traditions & Trivia
Earle Bridge Crossing
At the start of freshman year, every new student walks across the Earle Bridge while faculty and upperclassmen cheer; they cross it again on commencement day to receive their diplomas.
Gompei's Birthday Party
Named for Gompei Kuwada, a member of the Class of 1893 who was WPI's first goat keeper, the community throws a birthday bash for the mascot each February to break the winter gloom.
