What a friend would tell you
What Colgate is looking for
Colgate rewards polished, socially confident applicants with clear direction. Be ready to show why you want a small, rural, community-centered school with serious academics and a strong social scene. Demonstrated interest matters. ED1 carries a meaningful acceptance advantage. If you're an athlete, Colgate's D1 Patriot League programs are a legitimate hook. Show social engagement alongside academic focus.
What students wish they'd known
Greek life at 68% effectively is the social scene. If you're not interested in fraternities or sororities, your options narrow significantly. Hamilton, NY has almost nothing to offer off-campus. Winters are cold and snowy from November through April. The student body skews preppy, wealthy, and white. Students looking for political or cultural diversity will find it limited. The party culture is persistent and can be hard to avoid.
Colgate might be a fit if...
- You want a small liberal arts university where Greek life, D1 athletics, and tight community define the experience
- You're preppy, social, and outdoorsy and want a school that matches that energy
- You're targeting finance or consulting and want strong alumni networks in those pipelines

Colgate Campus & Culture
The Campus
Colgate's 575-acre campus occupies a hillside in Hamilton, New York (pop. 4,000), with sweeping views of the Chenango Valley. Willow Path, a tree-lined walkway, runs from the Greek Revival chapel at the top down to Taylor Lake at the bottom. Buildings are predominantly red brick and white trim in a Federal style. The Ho Science Center and Case-Geyer Library are mid-century additions. Seven Oaks Golf Course borders the north edge. The nearest city, Syracuse, is about an hour northeast.
The Social Scene
Greek life is social center; outdoor culture (hiking, skiing) strong; rural setting means tight community
Colgate Traditions & Trivia
Torchlit Procession
Every fall, the Konosioni Senior Honors Society leads the first-year class up the hill by firelight in a torchlit walk that opens orientation, and the same ceremony sends seniors off four years later.
The Number 13
Colgate was founded by 13 men with 13 prayers and 13 dollars; the official address is 13 Oak Drive, and the number shows up across traditions, athletics, and campus architecture so often that it is treated as lucky rather than cursed.
