What a friend would tell you
What W&L is looking for
W&L rewards students who embrace tradition, honor, and community. The Speaking Tradition (greeting everyone you pass) signals the culture they're filtering for. Show comfort with a small, values-driven community and specific interest in W&L's programs (Williams School of Commerce, Johnson Scholarship). ED is the strategic move. Show you understand and want the school's particular social contract.
What students wish they'd known
Lexington is tiny and isolated: the nearest major city (Roanoke) is an hour away. Greek life at 75% dominates the social landscape, and opting out means limited weekend options. The student body skews wealthy, white, and Southern. The school's historical associations with Robert E. Lee are a source of ongoing tension. The party culture is heavy, and the social scene can feel exclusive. Students who don't fit the preppy-Southern mold may feel like outsiders.
W&L might be a fit if...
- You want a small, tradition-rich college with an honor system that governs daily life, not just exams
- You're targeting finance, consulting, or law and want a school with a tight alumni network in those fields
- You're comfortable in a Greek-heavy, Southern social culture in a small Virginia town

W&L Campus & Culture
The Campus
Washington and Lee's 415-acre campus stretches across a hilltop in Lexington, Virginia (pop. 7,000), in the Shenandoah Valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. The Colonnade, a row of white-columned brick buildings dating to 1824, faces a sloping green lawn. Lee Chapel (1868, Victorian brick) houses the recumbent statue of Robert E. Lee. The Virginia Military Institute sits immediately adjacent. The campus architecture is uniformly Federal and Colonial Revival.
The Social Scene
Historic honor code, active Greek life, outdoor recreation, formal events
W&L Traditions & Trivia
Speaking Tradition
Custom holds that every student and faculty member greets each other on the path, and it holds today; every person you pass on campus says hello, not as a performance but as a matter of course.
Fancy Dress Ball
Since 1907, the student body organizes and attends an annual black-tie gala with a new theme every year, one of the oldest student-run formal events in the South.
