What a friend would tell you
What CofC is looking for
Show that you want Charleston as a classroom, not just a backdrop. CofC values students who connect their academic interests to the city's resources: the Lowcountry marine biology field stations, the historic preservation program, or the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art. In-state applicants with solid GPAs are nearly automatic; out-of-state students need to explain why this school specifically.
What students wish they'd known
Summer heat and humidity are oppressive (classes start in August when it's routinely 95 degrees). Charleston's social scene revolves around bars and restaurants, which can enable a drinking culture. The city is expensive for a public school town, and housing costs push students further from campus each year. Academic advising is inconsistent, and some departments are understaffed.
CofC might be a fit if...
- You want to study marine science, historic preservation, or hospitality in one of America's most beautiful cities
- You're drawn to a public liberal arts model with small classes but state-school tuition
- You'd rather spend weekends on a Charleston beach or exploring historic architecture than at a football tailgate

CofC Campus & Culture
The Campus
The College of Charleston's campus threads through 52 acres of downtown Charleston, mixing antebellum mansions, wrought-iron gates, and live oak alleys with modern academic buildings. Randolph Hall (1828) and its white portico anchor the Cistern Yard, where commencement is held under ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss. The Addlestone Library sits at the campus edge, steps from King Street shops and the Charleston waterfront.

CofC Traditions & Trivia
Crossing the Cistern
Spring graduates trade robes for white dresses or white dinner jackets and walk across the Cistern Yard, shaded by ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss; it is one of the most photographed commencement settings in the South.
Porter's Lodge Arch
On the first day, new students pass through the arch at Porter's Lodge inscribed with the Greek phrase Know Thyself and sign the book; on graduation day, they exit under the same arch, completing a four-year loop.
