What a friend would tell you

What Michigan State is looking for

MSU's rolling admissions make early application with strong grades the simplest path. For competitive programs (James Madison College, Lyman Briggs, Honors College), apply directly and write specifically about why that residential college model appeals to you. Engineering and agriculture applicants should reference specific research centers or faculty. MSU values breadth of engagement, not a single spike.

What students wish they'd known

The campus is so large that students in different programs can go four years without crossing paths, which creates isolation within the school. East Lansing winters are grey and cold for five months. Greek life is present but the party scene extends well beyond it, and alcohol culture is pervasive. The Nassar scandal's aftermath continues to affect campus culture and trust. With 50,000 students, bureaucracy and advising wait times are significant.

Michigan State might be a fit if...

  • You want a massive Big Ten research university with residential college options (James Madison, Lyman Briggs) that create smaller communities
  • You're targeting agriculture, packaging, supply chain, or engineering and want top-ranked programs in those fields
  • You can navigate a 5,200-acre campus and find your people among 50,000 students

Michigan State Campus & Culture

The Campus

Michigan State's 5,200-acre campus is one of the largest in the nation, stretching along the Red Cedar River in East Lansing. The north campus features the original Beaumont Tower (1928) and the collegiate Gothic buildings along the Red Cedar. The south campus houses the STEM complex, Spartan Stadium, and the Breslin Center. The campus is essentially a small city with its own power plant, dairy, and farms. Biking or buses are necessary to get between classes.

Michigan State Traditions & Trivia

The Rock
A boulder that has sat on campus since 1873 is repainted almost daily by students with birthday wishes, game hype, and marriage proposals, with groups sometimes staying up all night to guard their message before rivals paint over it.
Sparty Watch
After Michigan fans painted the Sparty statue maize and blue in the 1960s, Kappa Kappa Psi members began standing guard around the statue every night during rivalry week, a watch they still keep today.
