What a friend would tell you

What NC State is looking for

NC State values students who pick a specific college and program and explain why. Engineering, textiles, and agriculture applicants should reference particular labs, co-op programs, or Research Triangle partnerships. A generic 'I want to be an engineer' pitch blends into the pile. Show awareness of the Raleigh tech ecosystem.

What students wish they'd known

The split campus means a bus ride between many classes, and the scale (35,000+) can feel impersonal. The social scene is secondary to UNC Chapel Hill and Duke, which are 30 minutes away and draw talent and attention. Engineering weed-out courses are brutal, and academic advising is stretched thin. Raleigh is growing but still lacks the college-town charm of Chapel Hill or the urban density students from bigger cities expect.

NC State might be a fit if...

  • You want a Research Triangle engineering or CS degree with direct pipelines to tech companies in Raleigh-Durham
  • You prefer a large public university where career outcomes and industry connections matter more than campus prestige
  • You want ACC athletics and a campus that is growing and investing, even if it lacks the polish of older schools

NC State Campus & Culture

The Campus

NC State's 2,100-acre campus stretches across west Raleigh, split into North (engineering, textiles) and South (humanities, main quad) sections connected by Hillsborough Street. The 1911 red brick Holladay Hall anchors the older campus. Hunt Library on Centennial Campus is a standout: a metallic-clad, glass-walled building designed by Snohetta, with a robotic book retrieval system.

NC State Traditions & Trivia

Krispy Kreme Challenge
Each February, runners race 2.5 miles from the Memorial Bell Tower to a Krispy Kreme, eat a dozen doughnuts on the spot, and race back, all within one hour.
Free Expression Tunnel
A tunnel cutting through the center of campus is covered floor to ceiling in student-painted spray art; any organization can claim a stretch overnight, and it repaints itself every few days.
