What a friend would tell you

What UF is looking for

UF is RD-only with no early options, so your application needs to be complete and polished from the start. Strong academics (top 10% of class, rigorous coursework) are the baseline. Specific knowledge of UF's honors programs (Lombardi Scholars, University Scholars), research opportunities, or specific colleges (Warrington, Herbert Wertheim) sets you apart. Florida residents have a significant advantage, but out-of-state students need to be clearly above the median.

What students wish they'd known

At 52,000 students, UF is enormous, and the bureaucracy matches. Intro courses are huge, advising is impersonal, and getting into competitive majors (engineering, business) requires maintaining high GPAs under pressure. Gainesville is a college town but not much else; the nearest metro areas are two hours away. The heat and humidity from May through October are oppressive. Football culture is all-consuming during fall, which is great if you love it and exhausting if you don't.

UF might be a fit if...

  • You want a top public research university at Florida in-state tuition with SEC athletics and college-town life
  • You're self-motivated enough to navigate a school of 52,000 and find your niche without hand-holding
  • You're targeting engineering, business, or pre-med and want nationally ranked programs at public-school cost

UF Campus & Culture

The Campus

UF's 2,000-acre campus in Gainesville sprawls across north-central Florida, anchored by the red-brick Collegiate Gothic buildings around the Plaza of the Americas (live oaks, Spanish moss, brick walkways). Century Tower (a 157-foot carillon tower) is the visual landmark. The campus includes Lake Alice (complete with alligators), the Florida Museum of Natural History, and Ben Hill Griffin Stadium ('The Swamp,' capacity 88,000). Gainesville (pop. 140,000) is a college town two hours from both Orlando and Jacksonville.
