Northwestern University

Quaecumque sunt vera (Whatever things are true)
8,400 undergrads · 6:1 student-faculty ratio · NCAA Division I Big Ten
Northwestern rewards a clear major-school target: Medill (journalism), McCormick (engineering), Bienen (music), or the Kellogg pipeline for business-minded undergrads. Direct-entry programs mean you need to show direction early. The Evanston-Chicago split creates two vibes: suburban campus life and urban hustle. Greek life is huge (~40%). Be specific about why Northwestern's structure fits; 'interdisciplinary' alone reads as filler.

What a friend would tell you

What Northwestern is looking for

Northwestern's direct-entry schools (Medill, McCormick, Bienen, the School of Communication) mean you apply to a specific program, not just the university. Your application must demonstrate clear direction and explain why that specific school's approach fits your goals. Connect your interest to the Evanston-Chicago duality: campus intimacy plus big-city access. Vague interdisciplinary enthusiasm is not enough.

What students wish they'd known

Greek life is massive (~40% participation) and dominates the social scene, especially for underclassmen. The quarter system moves fast and offers less time to go deep in any single course. Evanston is pleasant but quiet; getting to Chicago requires a 30-to-45-minute L ride, which limits spontaneous city access. The campus culture can feel split between pre-professional strivers (Medill, Kellogg pipeline) and arts/humanities students who occupy different social worlds.

Northwestern might be a fit if...

  • You know exactly which Northwestern school you want (Medill, McCormick, Bienen, Communication) and can articulate why
  • You want a suburban campus with access to a major city, Big Ten sports, and strong school spirit
  • You are drawn to journalism, theater, music, or engineering programs that rank among the best nationally

Northwestern Campus & Culture

The Campus

Northwestern's 240-acre lakefront campus stretches along Lake Michigan in Evanston, 12 miles north of downtown Chicago. Deering Library (Collegiate Gothic, 1933) and University Hall (Victorian, 1869) anchor the older core. The Ryan Center for the Musical Arts and the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center represent newer additions in glass and steel. The Lakefill, a 1960s landfill extension, juts into the lake and serves as the campus beach and sunset spot. Chicago's skyline is visible from campus.
