What South Carolina is looking for

USC uses rolling admissions, so apply early for the best scholarship consideration. The Honors College is the academic differentiator; apply to it if your stats qualify. South Carolina residency matters for admissions and cost. Business school applicants should reference the Darla Moore School specifically. Demonstrated interest in specific programs (international business, which ranks nationally) strengthens your application.

What students wish they'd known

Columbia summers are brutally hot and humid (classes start in August, and it's still 95 degrees). The party and football culture is pervasive; students who don't participate can feel disconnected. Greek life (22%) and athletics dominate the social hierarchy. Academic rigor varies widely by department. The 65% four-year graduation rate is below flagship peers. Columbia is not Charleston; the city's cultural offerings are more limited than the state's coastal gems.

South Carolina might be a fit if...

  • You want a Southern flagship with SEC football, warm weather, and a historic downtown campus
  • You're targeting the Darla Moore School of Business or the Honors College specifically
  • You thrive in a large, spirited environment where game days, Greek life, and Southern culture define the social scene

South Carolina Campus & Culture

The Campus

USC's 359-acre campus sits in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, centered on the historic Horseshoe, a shaded quadrangle of Federal-style brick buildings dating to 1805. McKissick Museum and the original South Caroliniana Library anchor this space. The rest of campus mixes modern research buildings with Greek Revival architecture. Williams-Brice Stadium (80,000 seats) sits across the Congaree River. Columbia's Main Street restaurants and the Vista entertainment district are walkable from campus.
